National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) lifts off cargo spacecraft named SS KALPANA CHAWLA Carrying 3,630 kilograms of supply to International Space Station (ISS). This commercial cargo was launched on Thursday night called with the name of NASA Astronaut Kalpana Chawla, the first INDIAN-born woman to enter space, in contributions to human spaceflight.
The "SS kalpana Chawla" was launched at 9:30 pm EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) or 7:00 am IST ( Indian Standard Time). This spacecraft will attached to ISS after two days. This mission will deliver approximately 3,630 kilograms of cargo to space station.
This mission is planned with many research equipments and a compact toilet for Astronauts to use on deep space exploration missions. This mission also include a 3D camera which can be used during spacewalk. In this mission many things will be also enable for future exploration missions beyond the space station like mission to MARS and mission to MOON. Many scientists have elaborated the new designed of toilet which is sent to station in this mission.
This toilet is approx 60% smaller and 40% lighter than the current toilet in use at ISS. At the launch of this mission it's mark a special moment for everyone including husband of Kalpana Chawla.
ABOUT KALPANA CHAWLA
Kalpana Chawla was born in Haryana, India She moved to United States to University of Texas where she completed her master and doctorate degree in aerospace engineering in 1984. She also became naturalized US citizen, she applied for becoming Astronaut and got succeed and selected as a member of the NASA's 15th class of trainees.
In 1997, she was selected for 15 day shuttle mission on STS-87 that was dedicated for science experiments related Microgravity. On his second spaceflights, STS-107 of 16 days on the SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA. On 1st of February 2003 was last date of this mission end. A piece of foam struck on orbiter left wing at the time of launch which cannot be detected during the mission. This small piece of foam created a hole, which get bigger in size at the time of entry to earth atmosphere. On entering to Earth's atmosphere hot plasma entered the wing, tearing it forcefully and result are known to you and the shuttle at this was out of control and concluded the death of all crew members.
